Security Screensaver 2.0 by Drudger Security Screensaver 2.0 by Drudger
UPDATE: 23 July 2010

1) I rewrote it so the update and scan completes before the actual screensaver is triggered (the castle logo). Also now the cmd prompt is visible again showing the progress of the update and scan before the actual screensaver starts.

2) Now the download includes two screensavers, the original Security Screensaver and Security Screensaver NG (No Graphics) which will perform an update and scan silently with no cmd prompt visible and when complete will not start any graphic screensaver.

UPDATE: 21 July 2010

1) Now works with Microsoft Security Essentials 1 and 2 (beta)
2) When screensaver is triggered the cmd prompt is no longer visible if you stop the screensaver during scan.

Security Essentials Screensaver

I was reading how Avast has a screensaver than performs scans. I thought this was clever so I made one for Microsoft Security Essentials. This screensaver will perform an update and scan when activated.

No installation needed, just move the file where you wish to store it, right click and hit install. One bug is that when you do this it will start the screensaver, just move the mouse and ignore that and set as default screensaver.

Requires that you have Microsoft Security Essentials installed of course.

Should work in XP and up, tested on Win 7 x64

Consider this a "beta"

Good luck and Feedback welcomed! :D

Doesn't work on my Windows 7 :( (Windows 7 Ultimate x64, with MSE 2)
Testing the screensaver requires administrator's rights, and I've no graphic, even with the graphical one.
If I install the screensavers, the Preview button don't do anything.

Turn off UAC?

Sorry, but no.
UAC is a useful feature, and it is very less intrusive in Windows 7, so I keep it.

Well without being there I can't say what the problem is, I don't have any issue with it. V3 will be out soon, so maybe try it when the new versions out. :)

For me, the graphic doesn't come up. It shows the cmd prompt and says update finished, but no graphic, using either file.

Well, I wanted to post it as well but thought I better try it before recommending it to my self declared computer illiterate customers. I installed it EXACTLY as instructed on Win7 Home Premium.
It never showed the MSE screen saver and it took the task bar away; Start button was still there but no way to get the task bar back short of restarting the system.
Can't give that to my customers, too bad.

You have "customers" and yet couldn't figure out that your explorer crashed? Next time something like that happens hit control+Alt+Delete and start task manager and then restart explorer.exe

If it didn't show the screensaver then you started the "Security Screensaver NG (No Graphics)" . "Security Screensaver NG (No Graphics) which will perform an update and scan silently with no cmd prompt visible and when complete will not start any graphic screensaver"

Also explorer crashing is a known-to-me bug that happens if you keep your system on, continuously idle with the screensaver for say about 18 hours or more, not instantly like you seem to describe.

Also if you read the description you would have noticed "Consider this a "beta" "

So, I highly doubt you have "customers", odd that you joined deviantART today and came straight to this page. Also odd that I seen practically this same comment elsewhere.

Congrats on the lifehacker feature. A brilliant concept, because virus scans, often (for me on my antiquated machinery) cripple all other processes. It shows another facet of using a computers processing power to do something useful in down time. (See protein folding)

Doesn't seem to work for me. If i double click the .scr file, it works fine, but I can't get it to work on my Windows7 x64 machines when set as my screensaver.

Does for everyone else? All I can say is if your not running the administrator account then try something like this [link] ,you can use it to make a whitelist of programs you don't want UAC to bother you with. I never tried this program being as the first thing I did when I got Win7 was to disable UAC, lol.

Hi thanks for the quick reply,

I'm obviously doing something wrong as it is still doing the same thing. When it is d/l and unzipped it also opens with a comments box with your name in it which I close. There are 4 files in the folder, preview png, Readme Text, Security Screensaver NG.scr, and Security Screensaver.scr. The last 2 files are AutoCad script.

When I double click or right click and ask to open it still opens in notepad?

Cheers
John

Well either your selecting to open with notepad or you have the file association for .scr (screensaver)set to open with notepad. All I can say is use FileTypesMan [link] and see what the default action is set to do for .scr.

Running XP SP3. Downloaded unzipped, tried to install with castle logo, but got notepad open up with this................

And that is only part of it. Have I done something wrong in the way I have tried to install it?

Cheers

Yes, you def. did something wrong. Seems like you tried to open the screensaver with notepad. Place the screensaver in your documents folder and right click it, select install and ok.

unless i did something wrong i had problems with it it kept asking for access to a nonexistent drive sorry i failed to get a screen shot since i was busy hitting cancel in the numerous pop up i got from this

up to you but you might want to consider a rewrite and yes i did everything normal :-) still it is a good idea. Kinda surprised that Microsoft Security Essentials doesn't have this feature anyway?
